By Someone Living in a Low-Income Community
My name is Maria. I live in a small town where most people don’t make a lot of money. We work hard, but it’s hard to get ahead. A new bill just passed in Washington. Some people call it the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” They say it will help families. But it’s not helping mine.
This bill gives tax breaks to people who already have a lot of money. Rich people will save thousands of dollars every year. But poor people like me will not get much. I will save a few dollars on taxes, but I will lose more in other ways.
The bill makes it harder to get help from programs like SNAP, which helps me buy food. Now I have to follow new rules to keep my benefits. Some of my neighbors are losing their SNAP because they can’t meet the new work rules. Some are sick or taking care of family. Now they don’t know how they will eat.
The bill also takes money away from Medicaid. That’s the insurance I use when my kids get sick. We don’t go to the doctor unless we really have to, but now I’m scared I won’t be able to take them at all. If I lose Medicaid, I can’t afford to pay out of pocket.
People in my community are already struggling. We can’t afford higher bills or less help. We hoped this bill would help working families. Instead, it helps the rich and makes life harder for the rest of us.
I want lawmakers to know: we are trying our best. We don’t want handouts. We want fair help. We want our kids to grow up healthy and strong. We need laws that support families like mine, not just the ones who already have everything.
